WHAT IS DTF?

Direct-to-film—or DTF—printing is a modern apparel-decoration process in which a full-color design is first created as a transfer and then permanently applied to a garment with heat and pressure. Because transfer production and garment decoration happen separately, the process combines exceptional print quality with tremendous production flexibility.

STEP 1: CREATING THE DTF TRANSFER

The process begins with professionally prepared digital artwork.  The design is printed in reverse onto a specialized release film using high-quality, water-based pigment inks.  A carefully controlled white ink layer is printed behind the colors, creating an opaque foundation that keeps the artwork bright, sharp and true to the original design—even when it is applied to dark garments.  While the printed ink is still wet, a finely milled hot-melt adhesive powder is applied across the back of the design.  The powder adheres only to the printed areas, and any excess is removed.  The transfer then passes through a controlled curing process that sets the ink and bonds the adhesive to the design.  This creates a durable, flexible transfer that is ready to be permanently applied to fabric.  Once cured, each transfer is cooled, inspected, cut and stacked.  At that point, it can be applied immediately or stored for future use.  The finished design essentially becomes production-ready inventory—waiting for the right garment and the right order.

STEP 2: APPLYING THE TRANSFER

When it is time to decorate the garment, the item is placed on a professional heat press and briefly pre-pressed when needed to create a smooth surface and remove excess moisture.  The DTF transfer is then carefully positioned on the garment.  A precise combination of heat, pressure and time reactivates the adhesive layer.  As the adhesive melts, it carries the printed design into the garment’s fibers and creates a strong, lasting bond.  The carrier film is then peeled away, revealing the finished image.  Depending on the transfer and garment, a brief finishing press may be used to complete the bond and achieve the desired feel and appearance.  The result is a vibrant, highly detailed print with crisp edges, strong color and a smooth, flexible finish. DTF performs beautifully on cotton, polyester, blends, fleece and many other popular apparel fabrics.  It can reproduce fine details, gradients, photographic elements and complex full-color artwork without sacrificing durability.  Separating transfer creation from garment application is one of DTF’s most valuable features.  Transfers can be produced, cured and stored in advance, then applied only when garments are actually needed—creating powerful possibilities for repeat designs and ongoing apparel programs.

DTF FEATURES & BENEFITS

DTF printing brings together exceptional color, remarkable durability and nearly unlimited creative freedom. It is a versatile, dependable solution for businesses, schools, churches, teams, organizations, events and brands that want professional custom apparel built to look great and last. For our DTF printing, Ink King uses best-in-class Supacolor transfers because outstanding apparel starts with an outstanding transfer.

BRILLIANT, FULL-COLOR RESULTS

DTF produces rich, vibrant color with excellent opacity on both light and dark garments. A white ink foundation beneath the artwork keeps colors bright, accurate and consistent without allowing the garment color to interfere with the design. There are no practical limits on the number of colors within the artwork. Bold logos, subtle gradients, photographic elements and highly detailed illustrations can all be reproduced in a single design.

EXCEPTIONAL DETAIL AND CLARITY

Fine lines, small lettering, complex shapes and intricate artwork can be printed with remarkable precision. Crisp edges and smooth color transitions preserve the character of the original design instead of reducing it to a simplified version.Whether the artwork is clean and understated or packed with detail, DTF allows every element to make an impact.

PROVEN 80+ WASH DURABILITY

Custom apparel is meant to be worn, washed and enjoyed repeatedly. Our premium DTF prints can withstand 80 or more washes when the garment is properly cared for.In our experience—and in the experience of our customers—the print will often outlast the garment itself. The design remains securely bonded to the fabric while resisting cracking, peeling and fading through repeated washing and everyday wear.

SOFT, SMOOTH AND FLEXIBLE

A durable print should not feel like a rigid sheet sitting on top of the garment. High-quality DTF transfers flex naturally with the fabric and provide a smooth, comfortable finish. This allows the decoration to move with the garment while retaining its shape, color and detail. The result is apparel that looks professionally printed and remains comfortable enough for regular, all-day wear.

VERSATILITY ACROSS FABRICS AND PRODUCTS

DTF works beautifully on cotton, polyester, blended fabrics, fleece and many other popular materials. It can be used to decorate T-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, polos, performance apparel, workwear, tote bags and more. This versatility makes it possible to use the same design across an entire apparel collection while maintaining a cohesive, professional appearance—even when the garments differ in fabric, style or color.

EXCEPTIONAL QUALITY AT ANY QUANTITY

DTF is not limited to small jobs or short production runs. It delivers excellent value and dependable consistency for orders of virtually any size. The same controlled application process is used for every garment, helping maintain consistent color, placement and print quality from the first piece to the last. Whether an order includes a few garments, several hundred or considerably more, DTF can scale to meet the demands of the project.

CONSISTENT BRANDING ACROSS REPEAT ORDERS

Consistency matters when apparel is ordered throughout the year. Your logo should retain the same color, detail and professional appearance every time new garments are produced.Stored DTF transfers keep the approved design production-ready. This makes recurring orders easier to fulfill while helping businesses, schools, churches, teams and organizations maintain a consistent brand across different garments and ordering periods.

PREMIUM TRANSFERS MAKE THE DIFFERENCE

Not every DTF transfer provides the same level of quality. The inks, adhesive, film and curing process all affect how the finished design looks, feels and performs. That is why Ink King uses premium Supacolor transfers for our DTF printing. Their outstanding color reproduction, fine-detail capability, flexibility and proven durability help us produce apparel that looks exceptional when it is delivered—and continues looking great through repeated wear. The difference is visible in the print, noticeable in the feel and proven over the life of the garment.

BUY IN VOLUME. APPLY AS NEEDED

One of DTF’s most valuable advantages is the ability to produce transfers separately from the garments and store them for future application.Customers with a design they expect to use repeatedly can pre-purchase a larger quantity of transfers to receive volume pricing—without having to order and decorate every garment at once. The finished transfers are stored as production-ready inventory and applied whenever additional apparel is needed. This removes the pressure of predicting every garment size, style and quantity months in advance. Instead, transfers can be purchased economically in volume and used over time for:

• New employees or organization members

• Replacement garments

• Seasonal apparel needs

• Event and promotional merchandise

• Team or staff additions

• Restocks and recurring customer orders

Purchase the transfers in volume. Store them for the future. Apply them as demand arrives. It is a smarter, more flexible approach to managing an ongoing apparel program.

HOW TO CARE FOR DTF-PRINTED APPAREL

Premium DTF printing is built to last. With proper care, your design can remain vibrant and securely bonded through 80 or more washes—and may even outlast the garment itself.  A few simple laundry habits will help protect both the print and the apparel.

WAIT BEFORE THE FIRST WASH

Allow at least 24 hours after the design has been applied before washing the garment. This gives the adhesive and printed layers time to fully settle after heat application.

TURN THE GARMENT INSIDE OUT

Wash and dry decorated apparel inside out whenever possible. This reduces direct friction between the printed design and other garments, zippers, buttons and the inside of the washing machine or dryer. If the garment has exposed zippers, buttons or other hardware that could damage the fabric from the inside, follow the garment manufacturer’s care instructions instead.

WASH IN COLD WATER

Use cold or cool water with a normal or gentle wash cycle. Excessive heat can place unnecessary stress on both the garment and the printed design.A mild laundry detergent is best. Avoid chlorine bleach, harsh stain removers and other aggressive chemicals that may weaken the fabric or affect the color and finish of the print.

USE LOW HEAT—OR HANG DRY

For the longest possible print life, hang drying is the gentlest option. If using a dryer, tumble dry on a low-temperature setting.Repeated exposure to high dryer heat can shorten the life of both the garment and its decoration. Lower temperatures help preserve the print’s color, flexibility and bond to the fabric.

NEVER IRON DIRECTLY OVER THE DESIGN

Do not place a hot iron directly onto the printed area. Direct heat can damage or distort the transfer. If ironing is necessary, turn the garment inside out and avoid applying prolonged heat or pressure behind the design.

FOLLOW THE GARMENT’S CARE LABEL

DTF creates an extremely durable decoration, but the garment itself still has its own care requirements. Always consider the manufacturer’s instructions for the fabric—especially with performance apparel, polyester, fleece and specialty materials.

A LITTLE CARE GOES A LONG WAY

Your custom apparel was made to be worn and enjoyed. Wash it inside out, keep the temperatures moderate and avoid direct heat on the design. Those few simple steps will help your garment—and its print—continue looking great for years to come.
